Research Description
My research lab is focused at synthesizing novel small molecules derived from natural products. Specifically, we are interested in synthesizing fatty acids and curcuminoids derivatives because these compounds have shown interesting antimicrobial and anticancer properties. In order to investigate the activity and potency of these compounds, I am employing diverse and modern cellular and biochemical assays, with a particular emphasis in the inhibition of microbial DNA topoisomerases and ATPases. DNA topoisomerases are enzymes that are related to the replication of both microbial and cancer cells, while ATPase are involved with microbial conjugation of resistance genes. Compounds that can inhibit both DNA topoisomerases and ATPases are good candidates for the design of novel antibacterial and anticancer drugs. |
